Unwanted loneliness

October 18, 2024

On October 16th, the Ombudsman's Office attended the presentation of a Guide for the accompaniment of people in situations of UNWANTED LONELINESS, a scourge that consumes many people of all ages and conditions, but especially the elderly, who gradually see their social relationships fade away.

No one like children to explain with simplicity and clarity what UNWANTED LONELINESS is and how to solve it, as shown in the following video from "Solidarity SJD".

At the event, held at the SJD Hospital and organized by the San Juan de Dios Foundation, authorities from various Social Welfare administrations attended and were able to hear firsthand about the work done by the Foundation's volunteers and the experience of the co-author of the Guide, Mr. Jordi Ramon Rizo.

The testimonies and the presentation left no one indifferent.

Loneliness, as the poet G.A. Bécquer once said, is beautiful when you have someone by your side to share it with, but when it is unwanted, it is a living death, and it's in our hands to do something to prevent it—whether for a friend, a family member, a neighbor... it just takes the will to spend maybe five minutes talking to someone.

It’s not enough to sit and wait for the administration to solve all the problems. We also have tools in our hands; we just need to add the will and take action.
