Housing, poverty, and children's rights

The Ombudswoman for Citizenship participated in a working session organized by UNICEF, held at the Parliament of the Balearic Islands, focusing on Housing, Poverty, and Children’s Rights.
Political, institutional, and associative representatives attended the session, showing great interest in learning firsthand about the UNICEF Report on the importance of housing in child development and how this factor significantly affects children's lives and their access to fundamental rights.
The Report, published in March 2024 and titled I ALSO LIVE HERE, gathers data from 2010 to 2022 and provides evidence on the importance of housing in children’s lives, how housing affects their rights, and how this issue has remained largely unnoticed over the years.
The report presents conclusions and proposals for action, which Mr. Gabriel González, today's speaker, acknowledged as unlikely to be implemented in the short term within municipal, regional, or state policies. Continued hard work will be needed to make progress in this area.
Among the most interesting proposals was the need for tools to objectively analyze the situation and measure improvements. We understand that the Ombudswoman for Citizenship and other similar entities represent, in this regard, objective spaces for analysis, and their presence should be strengthened.
